aktpics > Day 108 - Desensitized. Mostly, anyway. One of my objectives for this project is to be more comfortable looking at myself. I have come a long way in that regard to do a shot like this.

I remembered that I had a book on lighting for portraits. After I managed to locate it, I looked through it looking for something that I could try to emulate for todays POD. This one was done by a photographer by the name of Hiroshi Kutomi.

The setup was surpisingly complicated, but fortunately I had all the components. He used an 8x10 camera outfitted with a 360mm lens (my E-3 will have to suffice). His exposure was 1/125sec @ f/45. I was somewhat defeated because my lens will only stop down to f/22. Then I remembered if I used a 2x teleconverter I could get f/45!

The lighting was as follows. Key light was an umbrella behind the camera. Fill was a softbox on the floor in front of the camera. I used a softbox to light the background also. To create the shadows on the face, black foam core cards stood on either side of the subject (me).

The problem I had right off the bat was that the softbox in front blew out all of my shadows (lowest setting), so I replaced it with a white card. PP done in LR.

I am glad I found that book - I will be using it in the future when I run out of ideas for a POD
aktpics > Day 103 - Exhausted. We took Derek to play indoor soccer this evening. I brought my camera and decided to see how well I would do at ISO 3200 without a flash. Horrible. As soon as I walked into the sports complex, I knew the existing light wouldn't be enough.

It was also the most challenging sporting event I have ever photographed. It is very fast moving and I only had one spot, next to the coach, where I could shoot unobstructed by glass.

After a 3.5 hour round trip, I didn't have a POD and decided to use this one from a couple of days ago. I really didn't like it too much, but after pumping up the contrast and playing around with a sepia/cyan duotone, it has grown on me a bit.

Derek's team won 7-2, btw, and he scored 5 goals!
aktpics > Day 101 - Rural Decay.
I have been trying to figure out what my fascination is with rural decay. It is pretty much out of character for me - I really don't like old stuff at all. I am wondering if it might be the novelty of it. Where I live, structures like the one behind me would have been bull-dozed long before they reached this state. Who knows.
aktpics > Day 81 - Got your nose. For an even more absurd version of this, click HERE.
aktpics > Day 80 - Visitors. Derek and Tyra (and their mom and dad) came to visit. I realized I hadn't done my POD yet. Tyra's expression makes me think of someone who will absolutely NOT have their eyes closed in the picture.
aktpics > Day 79 - Breaktime. Friday. I am sitting by the fountain, taking a break at work. I get this bizarre thought (one of many): wouldn't it be funny to take my clothes off and go for a swim.

Had I actually done that, I am sure I would have all the time I could ever want for photography. This spot is about 5 inches deep, so no one could ever accuse me of actually doing it.

I took the picture of the waterfall on Friday and the picture of me today after my shower with my hair still wet. My goal was to try to closely duplicate exposure, focus and white balance as closely as possible between the two pictures. Not perfect, but it almost looks believable.
aktpics > Day 78 - Blah. I was inspired by all of the great portraits, self and other, that I have been seeing here lately. My original goal with this one was to do a B&W with lighting that accentuated the lines in my face.

I used a single light source. I found a mesh bag that I though would make some interesting lighting and that is when things started to go awry. Interesting texture, but it makes me think I am having some sort of allergic skin reaction.

By keeping the light output minimal I started opening up the lens. Ended up wide open at F2.0. So much for the sharp lines on my face - I am lucky one or two shots had both eyes in focus.

Lastly, the only time I ever see myself is in the mirror. I think that is why I ended up with this pretty un-interesting angle.

I do want to re-visit this one with some harsher light and a stopped down lens. But I think taking portraits of OTHER people will probably be more helpful to my learning.
aktpics > Day 77 - Wounded Bear. I had my coffee in hand and was ready to go to work only to see Merlin foaming at the mouth. I took his collar off and noticed a nick in it. I think he caught it on something when jumping down from the window.

It has been quite a miserable experience for him so far. He is able to eat his wet food if I elevate his bowl a bit, but it seems he won't drink unless I remove the collar.

Watching him eat his dry food quite an experience. He scoops up the kibble in the cone, lifts his head and tries to catch them in mid air. If he misses, he bobs his head back and forth trying to get it to roll towards his mouth, which kind of makes me think of Stevie Wonder.

Another day off for me, waiting to speak with the vet.
aktpics > Day 76 - Grounded. I feel like such a parent. Merlin is not allowed outside for 2 weeks, until he gets his stitches removed. Then I may have to impose some sort of cerfew.

It's a good time to be a squirrel or a bird in my yard.

Thanks again to all of you well-wishers. Merlin would thank you too, but he is a bit pre-occupied.
